Australia's 3G networks are gone, and plenty of Adelaide alarm systems lost their reporting path when the towers went dark. Here's how to tell if yours is one of them.
Australia's 3G networks are gone. Vodafone switched off in December 2023, and Telstra and Optus both shut down on 28 October 2024. Phones got plenty of warning. Alarm systems didn't get the same attention — and a surprising number of Adelaide homes and businesses are still running panels that lost their reporting path when the towers went dark.
The nasty part is that most of these systems fail quietly. The siren still works. The keypad still arms and disarms. Everything looks normal. The only thing that's stopped is the part you actually pay monitoring for: the panel telling anyone when something's wrong.
The Symptoms: How to Tell If Your Alarm Lost Its Voice
You may have a stranded system if any of these sound familiar:
- Your monitoring centre called about a "polling fail", "communication fail" or "late to test" — or worse, stopped receiving anything from your site months ago.
- The keypad shows a trouble light, "Comms Fail", "GSM fault" or beeps periodically and nobody's been able to explain why.
- Your alarm app stopped working somewhere around late 2024 and never came back.
- You triggered the alarm (or had a genuine event) and nobody was notified.
- You honestly can't remember the last time you received an alarm notification — for a monitored system, silence isn't always good news.
If you're not sure, there's a simple check: arm the system, trip a sensor in agreement with your monitoring centre, and confirm they received the signal. If they didn't, your communicator is almost certainly the problem. We run this test as a standard part of any alarm health check.
Which Systems Are Affected?
It's less about brand and more about era. Panels installed from roughly the late 2000s through to the late 2010s were commonly fitted with GSM/3G communicators — either built in or as an add-on module. In Adelaide that covers an enormous number of systems, including typical installs of:
- Bosch Solution-series panels with 3G plug-on modules
- DSC PowerSeries-era panels with GSM communicators
- Hills Reliance panels with 3G comms
- Ness panels with GSM dialler modules
- Paradox systems using 3G reporting modules
Two other groups worth mentioning:
- Panels reporting over the old phone line. If your alarm was still dialling out over a copper phone service, the NBN transition has likely already broken or degraded that path — a different shutdown, same result.
- "It was upgraded years ago" systems. Some upgrades in the mid-2010s went from 2G to 3G, which felt future-proof at the time. Those are exactly the units stranded now.
If your panel is newer and was installed with a 4G or IP communicator, you're fine — but it's worth confirming rather than assuming.
Your Two Options: New Communicator, or New System
The good news: losing 3G doesn't automatically mean replacing the whole alarm. There are two paths, and the right one depends on the panel behind the keypad.
Option 1 — Fit a 4G and/or IP Communicator to Your Existing Panel
Many panels from the affected era are otherwise healthy: solid detection, decent zone coverage, familiar operation. For these, a modern communicator module restores reporting over 4G, your internet connection, or ideally both at once (dual-path), so one outage doesn't silence the system.
This path makes sense when the panel itself still earns its keep. Things we weigh up on site:
- Panel age and condition — board revision, battery history, corrosion, past faults.
- Compatibility — whether a current 4G/IP module is actually made for your panel.
- What you want from the system — some older panels will report reliably but will never give you a modern app experience.
Option 2 — Replace the Panel
Sometimes the communicator failure is the push a tired system needed. Replacement is usually the better call when several of these apply:
- The panel is 15+ years old or the model line is discontinued with poor parts availability.
- Batteries, sirens or detectors are also due — stacking new parts onto an old backbone is poor value.
- You want app control, automation, or cameras integrated with the alarm.
- The zone layout no longer matches the property — extensions, granny flats, new sheds.
- The system has a history of false alarms or intermittent faults nobody has pinned down.

What drives the decision (and the cost)
Rather than quote figures that would be wrong for your site, here's what actually moves the needle: whether a compatible communicator module exists for your panel; whether the backup battery and detectors are also due; how many zones and keypads are involved; whether you want single-path or dual-path reporting; the monitoring arrangement; and how accessible the panel and cabling are. Don't Wait for a Break-In to Find Out
The 3G shutdown was almost two years ago, and we're still finding Adelaide systems that have been silently disconnected the whole time. Every one of those owners believed they were monitored.
